About Dr. Mumtaz
Dr. Mumtaz Khan is Chief of the Center for Disease Control at the National Institute of Health in Islamabad, Pakistan, National Coordinator of Pakistan’s Field Epidemiology and Laboratory Training Program (FELTP) and Team Lead of Pakistan’s 7-1-7 initiative. With 25 years of experience in public health and infectious disease control, he has been a driving force behind integrating the 7-1-7 methodology into Pakistan’s FETP curriculum—embedding a culture of timely outbreak detection, notification and response into the training of the country’s next generation of field epidemiologists.
Why he’s nominated
Under Dr. Mumtaz’s leadership, Pakistan has built one of the most robust coalitions of national and provincial stakeholders in the 7-1-7 community—bringing together the diverse partners needed to drive rapid, system-wide progress in outbreak detection, notification, and response. As the first country in the Eastern Mediterranean Region to use 7-1-7 in Early Action Reviews, Pakistan has not only demonstrated what swift, committed implementation can achieve, but has become an inspiration and reference for good practice across the region. His willingness to share Pakistan’s experience openly has accelerated progress far beyond his own borders.
