Ricardo Echalar is based in Nairobi, Kenya as the Regional Emerging Threats Advisor for the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Kenya and East Africa Mission, providing technical and programmatic leadership on global health security, health emergencies, and One Health. He is an epidemiologist with nearly 20 years of experience in domestic and global programs, working on infectious diseases, emergency preparedness and response, and health communication and advocacy. He has worked on several response efforts during this career, including the 2009 H1N1 influenza pandemic, Ebola outbreaks, pneumonic plague, and the COVID-19 pandemic. During his career he has worked for USAID, NGOs, and WHO/PAHO, working in Latin America and the Caribbean, Sub-Saharan Africa, and Southeast Asia. He has extensive experience working with global health actors and multilateral partner institutions and has served as a technical expert on global advisory groups.
