Prof. Aamer Ikram, former Chief Executive Officer of the National Institutes of Health Pakistan, holds prestigious international portfolios. Currently, he is Chair of the Advisory Board for Training Programs in Epidemiology & Public Health Interventions Network (TEPHINET); Vice President, International Association of Public Health Institutes (IANPHI); Regional Technical Advisor, EMPHNET; member, Technical Advisory Group–Biosafety, WHO; Partnership for International Vaccine Initiatives (PIVI); Strategic Council Gulf CDC; International Biosafety & Biosecurity Initiative for Science (IBBIS); Executive Committee Institute of Safety in Technology & Research (ISTR) UK; Agency for Public Health Education Accreditation (APHEA).
Previously, he has served on numerous international boards and committees focusing on global health security and public health including Chair Board of International Federation of Biosafety Associations (IFBA); member of the Board & Governance Committee GAVI, The Vaccine Alliance; TAG Health Security Interface WHO; Lusaka Agenda Working Group, Future Global Health Initiatives; Global Council International Vaccine Institute (IVI); and International Society of Infectious Diseases (ISID). He is a Fellow and Councilor of the Pakistan Academy of Sciences.
Prof. Ikram graduated from Pakistan’s Army Medical College in 1987; completed a Diploma in Pathology in 1990; MCPS Clinical Pathology in 1991; Fellowship (FCPS) Microbiology in 1998; clinical training in the UK (2005); and PhD in microbiology from Baqai Medical University in 2014. He holds the Diploma Occupational Safety Health & Environments; Diploma Disaster Management; Certificate in Emerging Infectious Diseases from University of Iowa; and Dual-Use Biosecurity from Bradford University. He qualified as Registered Biosafety Professional (RBP) from the American Biological Safety Association (US); Biosafety Professional (BSP) from the ISTR (UK); and IFBA Certified Professional status. He was awarded FRCP by Royal College Edinburgh (2012); FRCPath by Royal College of Pathologists London (2014); Fellowship in Public Health from Royal Colleges UK (2018); and Fellow ISTR UK (2025).
He has been honored with national awards of Hilal-e-Imtiaz (Military) and Sitara-e-Imtiaz (Military); received ‘Biosafety Heroes Award’ from the International Federation of Biosafety Associations; and he was nominated as Chairperson of the year 2024 by AI Global Medics.
